Last month I invited readers to contribute their tips on communication, presentation and image. These are featured in this edition of my newsletter. A number of them focused on social and business etiquette so a few words about this to begin.

Etiquette means manners, protocol, custom, propriety and decorum. In other words, effective interpersonal and communication skills. Refined social and business etiquette will lead to personal and professional success.
Tips to achieve success

Business cards
They are part of your personal and corporate image so make sure the design and quality reflects this. Keep cards handy in a smart holder so you are ready to exchange with others. When you receive another’s card take the time to look at it and never deface by folding or writing on it.

Messages of thanks
Express your thanks to a friend, colleague or business associate by sending a handwritten note or card. It will be appreciated and probably kept and displayed by the receiver. At other times telephone, fax or email messages will suffice. It’s the thought that counts!

Telephone presence

Smile as it affects the quality of your voice and you sound friendly and enthusiastic. Try standing up while talking on the phone – it creates more energy, particularly useful for those difficult calls.

Network your way to success
The connections and relationships that you make during networking will pay off so make it part of your routine. Make sure you follow up with people and stay in touch. Your business will become stronger by knowing more people and being visible.

Grooming
For her – pay attention to your hands by having regular home or professional manicures. For business, keep polish in neutral tones.

For him – facial hair should be neat and presentable so keep your moustache or beard trimmed and in proportion to your facial features.

Style
For her – your lingerie is the foundation of an outfit and can make a difference to the look and comfort of your clothing. Take the time to be fitted by an expert as your sizing changes over time and from one label to another.

For him – a quality belt has five holes and is sized from the buckle end to the middle hole. This is the hole that is used to fasten the belt. Check that your belt fits the loops on the trousers ie not too narrow or too wide.

recommended book

A Guide to Elegance - for every woman who wants to be well and properly dressed on all occasions by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux

First published in 1964 and republished in 2003. Some of the tips made me smile but little has changed when defining "elegance".

This book inspired the novel Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro, published in 2003. This is holiday reading for me so a review will follow at a later date.
