Thank you to everyone who gave such positive feedback about my website and newsletter. Welcome also to new subscribers. It is a pleasure to share information and tips regarding communication or image matters that you are sure to find useful in your private and working life.

Now to the topic for this month – the quality and fit of your garments. Men and women spend a significant amount on their clothing, with the aim of looking and feeling good whatever the occasion. Unfortunately, many people miss-the-mark often because the quality and fit of their clothing is not the best.

Quality and fit

Consider these points before you make your next purchase:

1. Choose styles that suit your body shape and proportions. Know your style and you will not be a victim of fashion.

2. Opt for quality over quantity. Quality garments are more durable and versatile and will extend your wardrobe selections.

3. Wear clothing ‘elegantly loose’ – it will make you look thinner if you are too heavy and heavier if you are too thin. Beware the ‘baggy’ look as it’s unflattering as well.

4. Fabrics should be natural or quality blends. You’ll appreciate the difference.

5. Check jackets do not wrinkle across the back or under the collar – this is a sure sign that it does not fit well.

6. Clothing details such as lapels, pockets, pleats and slits should lie flat and even. Pulling and puckering means the garment is too tight.

7. Clothing finishes include the linings, interfacings, hems, seams, top stitching, buttonholes and buttons. When choosing a garment, you will get what you pay for.

8. Checks and stripes should match at all seams.

9. Ignore the size on the tag and wear what fits. Sizes vary depending on the label, style and fabric. Select the size that fits (remember ‘elegantly loose’) and you will look and feel fabulous.

10. Use a three-way mirror in the dressing room and view yourself from every angle.

After you’ve considered all of this, if you are still in doubt about the quality and fit of the garment, don’t buy it! It will be an expensive mistake and probably spend more time in the
wardrobe than on your back.

tip of the month

Laundering business shirts

It’s usually the collar that needs the most attention when washing a business shirt. Try gently rubbing the stain with ordinary shampoo. The shampoo dissolves body oils, so it works wonders. Launder the shirt as usual and it’s done. An alternative tip – send them to the laundry or drycleaner (who said “life’s too short to do shirts”?)

recommended book

Many female subscribers will be familiar with InStyle magazine. The book, InStyle – Secrets of Style is the complete guide to dressing your best every day. It is a 2003 publication and at A$19.95 it’s a good buy. You should find a copy at your local newsagent.
