kerrie scott : communication and image specialist

nov-dec 2004

Now is the time when we take stock of what we have achieved during the past twelve months and celebrate. It is also time to consider your goals for the coming year and to think about how these can be achieved.

I encourage you to include goals around your personal image, presentation and communication skills.

To assist in defining these goals it will be helpful to undertake a self-assessment and an audit of your personal image. Be very honest with yourself and seek feedback from others about how they perceive you. Below are focus areas to consider and some questions to address.

Your personal image assessment

Body - how do you rate your body fitness, weight, figure and posture?

Grooming - is your grooming always scrupulous? Do you have a current professional hairstyle? Are your nails well kept?

Style - are you happy with your personal style? Do you have the right clothes for all occasions? Can you confidently coordinate your clothing? Do you wear clothes 'elegantly loose'? Are you aware of new season styles?

Accessories - do you have a range of accessories in your wardrobe and do they make a statement? Are all pairs of shoes in good repair? Is your jewellery and watch tasteful? Do you carry good quality handbags/briefcases?

Appearance - are you projecting a positive and lasting image? Do you look much different from how you did 10 years ago? Does your appearance reflect the ‘real’ you?

Interpersonal skills - are you satisfied with the quality of your relationships? Do you confidently communicate with family, friends, colleagues and associates? Are you often/sometimes misunderstood?

Use your responses to formulate goals for 2005. Some will be 'short-term' goals eg. visiting the hairdresser to update your current hairstyle. Other 'long-term' goals will require discipline, dedication and perhaps the support of others eg. dietitian, coach, image consultant, etc.

Your confidence and self esteem will be enhanced by revamping your personal image. And remember -

you make it happen - expect everything!

To all of my e-newsletter readers, clients, associates and friends, thank you for your support throughout 2004. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a fun, safe holiday season. Let's look forward to an exciting and wonderful 2005. Best wishes until then.

"Ms Scott's presentation was professional in both content, physical preparedness and presentation. She related to her audience in a friendly, yet knowledgeable manner, which both relaxed the group and invited their active participation and questions. I would strongly recommend Ms Scott to any company seeking to improve their staff's understanding of style and personal presentation".

Handling the small talk

In business and social situations, it's the 'small talk' that can make or break a conversation. A rule of thumb here - tune into the other person's interests. Ask questions and listen! Your reactions or remarks will allow them to come back with more information. Not only will you build rapport but you will be considered a great conversationalist. Try it at the next function you attend.
