Speak up – if the thought of public speaking terrifies you, start small. Offer to introduce a guest speaker or chair a meeting. When your confidence grows, look for speaking opportunities at project meetings, conferences, dinners and other work functions.
Get published – contribute to in-house newsletters, industry magazines and journals. Why not write a book? You will become regarded as an expert in your field.

Build relationships – get to know people within and outside your industry or company. Be accessible, offer to assist, and always honour your commitments.
Be active – join a professional association. Attend meetings regularly. Put your hand up for committees or working parties. Your contribution will be valued and other opportunities will arise if you are prepared to step up to the task.
Create connections – take an interest in people and look for ways to connect with them. Send notes and messages and use the phone to stay in touch.
Make referrals – if you value another's product or service, pass the details onto colleagues. Both parties will be appreciative and remember you in a positive light.
Collect testimonials and references – if you are commended for a job well done, ask the customer, associate or colleague to put their words in writing. Keep these as part of your career portfolio and use them when applying for a new position.
Learn more – ask for further training, attend courses, volunteer for special projects and read widely. This will enhance your career planning.
Look, sound and act the part
